Juneteenth Yakima Style

But before you decide, make room for one more this Saturday, June 18, 2022, at 12 p.m. at MLK Jr. Park in Yakima for the 31st year annual NAACP Juneteenth event.

The Juneteenth Yakima 2022 program will begin at 12:15 p.m. Resource and information booths will be on site along with food vendors. Children under 12 years old get a free hot dog and snack while supplies last!  Attendees will enjoy musical performances, oral histories, spoken word performances, and more.

So while the party is Saturday, the City of Yakima's observance is set for Monday, June 20th when the City offices and most non-emergency services will close including the Public Works office, the Y-PAC office, and the Harman Center.

Yakima Transit will not provide bus service on June 20th. Garbage pick-up will not be delayed, but the Refuse Division office will be closed on June 20th.

Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African-Americans who in simple terms didn't get word of Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation and the end of the Civil War. Originating in Galveston, Texas, it has been celebrated annually on June 19 in various parts of the United States since 1865.
