Yakima Police have identified a man shot by an officer Sunday night as 34-year-old Luke Mickle of Moses Lake.

YPD Capt. Jeff Schneider said the shooting occurred after an officer was called to the are of North First and East F streets, where witnesses say Mickle was breaking windows out of cars in the parking lot of a nearby motel.

When the officer arrived, Mickle was standing in the intersection, holding a wooden club.
He was told to put the object down, but instead advanced toward an officer who then fired multiple gunshots at Mickle. Mickle was taken to a Yakima hospital, where he is being treated for his wounds.
YPD's Special Investigations Unit is handling the case, trying to determine whether the shooting was justified.
The officer involved in the shooting has been with the department for seven years and has been placed on administrative leave while the investigation continues. This is the first officer-involved shooting in 2018.
