It’s a problem we book readers have that we don’t want to acknowledge. TOO MANY BOOKS!

For some, that statement is blasphemy. You can never have too many books! Even if you have piles and piles that you have read and more enormous piles and piles that are waiting TO BE read.

The struggle is real!

But, for most book lovers, there comes a time when we need to let go. Let someone else enjoy these adventures that, for many, were read once and then placed on a shelf like a trophy.

What do you do with your unwanted books?

That was a thought that Avilyn Dickinson had in the WTF Yakima Facebook Group.

Some places in Yakima, like Encore Books, will offer store credit, but it depends on the type and condition of the book. But what if you don’t care about getting anything for them? You just want them to set them free for other people to enjoy.

Avilyn asked, “Best place to donate books right now?

Great suggestions were given from community members. Places like the YWCA, Summit Thrift, and Goodwill.

Two suggestions were given more than any other.

Nursing homes! Residents welcome the new adventures that a story can bring, but with the vast majority of them on a fixed income, entertainment can be limiting. Be sure to inform the nursing home and check before you show up with a big box of books though (safety reasons).

The other suggestion was “The Free Little Libraries” or “Little Box Exchange”. If you’ve never heard of these, they are beautiful and brilliant.

Think of a cross between a birdhouse and a mailbox. Only, they’re for books. People can open and take one and leave one. There are several in different neighborhoods throughout the Yakima Valley.
